What is an oval face shape?
The best way to describe it is with an illustration.
Many hairstyles work with an oval face shape because there’s no serious exaggeration one must attempt to minimize. The downside is that choosing the best style or cut is harder for you.
After all, there’s more to the right cut for you than face shape.
Also, one must be careful when figuring out their face type. A long oval face could be oblong, which works best with other hairstyles. One could also misinterpret an oval face with a rectangular face.
Rules of thumb
A good rule of thumb to follow with oval, rectangular and oblong face shapes is to choose a cut or style that minimizes narrow facial features and instead gives the perception of a slightly wider head or face.
Cuts and styles that widen include:
- Waves and curls;
- layers;
- Side sweeps and/or
- Wavy bangs.
Ask your hairdresser
If you are at a total loss for what type of cut to get, ask your hairdresser. You don’t necessarily have to follow their advice, but you might get some great ideas that work perfectly for you.
Long or short?
Fortunately, all lengths can work well with this shape. The key is creating body and volume to offset any narrow facial features. This can be done with waves and curls for longer hair and layers, side sweeps, and texture with shorter hair.
